OSHA now recommends that employers adopt the use of more-modern safety helmets to better protect their workforce when the potential for head injuries exists. According to OSHA, safety helmets provide superior protection against side impact than hard hats. OSHA personnel themselves will begin wearing safety helmets instead of traditional hard hats when in the field.
Both hard hats and safety helmets must meet specific standards set by the American National Standard for Industrial Head Protection and the two OSHA construction and general industry standards for headwear.
Safety helmets have a clear advantage over traditional hard hats. The addition of integrated chin straps keeps the helmet in place when workers are not upright, move quickly or experience a fall. Further, conventional hard hats lack vents, trapping heat inside.
